Circa loves the Coolie Shade

The coolie shade... it's an exaggerated shade resembling a coolie hat, used by historical Chinese laborers. The top diameter measures much smaller than the bottom diameter, creating this dramatic look.

Here are a few examples of how Circa incorporates the coolie shade on products around the shop. These shades are available for custom order through Lux Lampshades.

Behind the scenes: When the container arrives via eighteen wheeler early the morning of shipment, it takes a huge team of people to unload, unwrap, and install the new arrivals. It is so much fun to watch everything transform.

The entire shop gets emptied and then every room is redone with the new antiques.

Our guys work hard to get all of the heavy pieces unloaded and into place in the shop.

If you haven't met Janelle Hansberger in the Charlotte retail shop, you are missing out! We have loved having her with us at Circa but we especially love the fact that she is such an amazing person. Eleven months ago, Janelle lost her left leg below the knee to a flesh eating bacteria. This hasn't slowed her down --- last Sunday, Janelle ran her first triathlon, The Ramblin Rose, in Huntersville, NC along with 4 of her closest friends. All I can say is, "YOU GO GIRL!"

A friend of mine who is the Program Coordinator for the Continuing Education department at Queen's College passed along some great information on an upcoming class offered at Queens on the history and architecture of furniture. It sounds very interesting. Please see the info below for more details...

History and Architecture of Furniture

This course will show you how to identify different furniture styles through the use of pictures and actual pieces of antique furniture.

We will address topics such as the difference in Louis XV and Louis XVI; the primary characteristics of Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Arts & Crafts; and why the Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Chair is called that even though it was designed in Germany, not Spain. You will also learn what styles can be most readily mixed and why.

The course will conclude with a trip to the Mint Museum of Art to identify the styles you learn in class.

The instructor, Loyd Dillon, has more than 40 years experience in interior design. He is accredited by the Council for the Qualification of Residential Interior Designers (CQRID) as a Professional Interior Designer, accredited by The Interior Design Society (IDS) at their highest level, twice president of the Charlotte Chapter of IDS, twice president of the Carolinas Chapter of IDS, past national president of IDS, and one of only nine people ever to receive IDS's Fellowship Award - their highest honor.

• Dates: Oct. 15 – Nov. 5 (four Saturdays)

• Time: 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

• Location: Queens – Hodges Taylor Humanities Campus (401 N. Tryon Street in Transamerica Square Uptown). Last class is held at the Mint Museum of Art.

Common Grounds Farm Stand

I love stopping by the Common Grounds Farm Stand located at the corner of Providence and Queens for fresh vegetables and locally made goodies. Our very own Patrick Lewis contributes each week by baking his famous chocolate bread. I must say that it is DEE-LIC-IOUS! Common Grounds is a wonderful organization to support as its proceeds benefit the Urban Ministry Center.

They are open on Thursdays from 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM, May 26 - September 29.

Now that we have your table covered...what to serve?

Try Martha Stewart's Smoked Salmon Cobb:

Ingredients: 3/4 cup buttermilk, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/4 cup minced shallots (from 2 shallots), 3 tablespoons chopped fresh dill, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt, Freshly ground pepper, 8 ounces bacon (about 10 strips), 1 head Boston or bibb lettuce, leaves torn into 3-inch pieces, 3 large hard-cooked eggs, quartered lengthwise and halved crosswise, 3 ounces smoked salmon (flaked with a fork into bite-size pieces), 1 avocado (pitted, peeled, and cut into 1/2-inch dice)

Directions: Whisk buttermilk, mayonnaise, shallots, dill, lemon juice, and salt in a small bowl until well combined. Season with pepper. Cover, and refrigerate until cold, about 30 minutes.

Arrange bacon in a single layer in a large saute pan, and cook over medium heat, turning occasionally, until crisp, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain on paper towels. When cool, crumble bacon into bite-size pieces.

Arrange lettuce on a platter. Top with bacon, eggs, salmon, and avocado. Drizzle with 1/2 of the dressing. Season with pepper, and serve with remaining dressing on the side.

Christmas Inspiration for your Home

Last Sunday, the Circa clan gathered at Jane's & Cindy's houses for our annual Christmas celebration. We start the evening at Jane's with drinks and hors d'oeuvres and then finish the evening at Cindy's with a delicious seated dinner. It even snowed this year - a Circa Christmas Miracle, we joked!

This year, we decided that anyone under the age of 27 would perform a skit! And a skit, we came up with..."The Twelve Days of Circa"...and we made everyone participate. It was hilarious!!!

Every year, I leave happy and think about how beautiful both of their houses are, especially when decorated for Christmas! I'm sure that you will be inspired too...

Circa's 2nd Annual Holiday Open House with Santa Clause was a hit on Wednesday! We all had a blast with children and dogs running around the shop. It definitely got me in the Christmas spirit. Lindsay took some awesome photos of the kids and treats:
